This mPulse release includes the following features:

• Custom Dimensions —SOASTA now has support for Custom defined dimensions, supporting three data types (Boolean, Text, and Numeric). Just like our existing metrics and timers, users will have the ability to define lookup methods for each dimension that Boomerang utilizes to pull information from web beacons. For native APIs, the user will simply need to define a variable.

  Note: Custom Dimensions will be rolled out gradually.

• New Dashboard Dimensions —The following new mPulse Dashboard dimensions are available for the Dashboard Filter toolbar:
  • Beacon Type Dimension (Pro and Enterprise only)—mPulse has the ability to instrument many kinds of performance data (Full page loads, XHRs, manual instrumentation and more). The Beacon Type dimension allows you to filter your data by these data or beacon types, allowing you to separate and drill down into performance timers.
    
  • Device Type and Manufacturer Dimensions (Pro and Enterprise only)—We’ve added the ability to segment data by: device type for all versions of mPulse, device manufacturer for Pro and Enterprise, and device model for Enterprise. Filtering is also now tiered for easier navigation.
  • ISP (Pro and Enterprise only) and Connection Type (Enterprise only) Dimensions—We've modified the data source for these dimensions (GeoIP based) to increase the accuracy of data.

  Note: ISP and Connection Type Dimension will be rolled out gradually.

• Single Page Application - Angular.js Support —The mPulse Boomerang AngularJS plugin allows users to monitor their Angular.js Single Page Applications (SPAs). With the AngularJS plugin, mPulse now allows tracking all SPA navigations beyond the initial navigation.  For more information on SPA applications and this new Boomerang plugin, please see our blog post How to provide real user monitoring for single-page applications. 
• New mPulse APIs—In addition to mPulse Boomerang Angular support, this release debuts three additional APIs that expand mPulse accessibility for web and native app developers:
  • mPulse Beacon API —The mPulse Beacon API (Version 2) exposes a simple way to send and log beacon data from configured web and native apps. Integration support is provided via REST for both web and mobile apps as well as native mobile integration for both iOS and Android apps.
  • mPulse JavaScript API—The mPulse JavaScript API (Version 1) exposes a simple way to send and log beacon data from JavaScript. This API is a standalone API but also is a consumer of the mPulse Beacon API, REST API. The mPulse JavaScript API provides an initialization method, and a method for each of the custom types supported within mPulse: Metrics, Timers, Page (or View) Groups, and for user-defined Dimensions.
  • SOASTA Repository API — The SOASTA Repository API is a collection of REST APIs that allows users to: Authenticate and obtain a security token, interact with objects (CRUD), and to read and write Seed Data content in CSV form.

mPulse™ 54 introduces the ability to utilize multiple DataStores (each running a PostgreSQL database) on a separate instance from the instance that runs the DataService. mPulse elasticity at the data layer gives us two important capabilities:

1. More space to store all of the aggregates of the beacons we’re collecting. As each DataStore fills up, we can split it n ways (at runtime), then we only need to keep 1/n the data in each DataStore.
2. mPulse is already sharding data by day and domain, and now each customer’s data will be striped across all the available DataStores. This dramatically improves large queries’ performance. On the replica environment we tested on before deploying this version, loading a dashboard for the last 30 days (1.5 Billion beacons) went from 4 minutes (production, running 53 with 1 DataStore) to 15 seconds (replica, running 54 with 4 DataStores).
